I Love Yous

Robin Hanson has something to say about love as do the guys at Marginal Revolution.

Despite having been through a few relationships, I still can't work out what a guy really means when he says "I love you". I've also only felt really compelled to say "I love you" as a form of reciprocity (see Cialdini's "Influence"), which borders on hypocrisy although looking at it another way, it's not truly hypocritical to say it as I usually have genuine fondness for the other party. Why and when is it appropriate to say "I love you" and what does it really mean? What is love and what does it mean to love someone?

Maybe it means you like the other person enough to say something to them even when you don't understand what it means, just because they want to hear it.
