Quick Movie Reviews

I have a very bad habit developed from childhood -- going on binges. If I'm introduced to a new webcomic that is half way decent, I'm very likely to read my way through the entire archive at a sitting. From time to time, I'd spend a whole day in bed just reading. This time, I have just binged on a few movies. So here is a rundown of what I think of them.

Anchorman
I wanted to watch this movie because the boyfriend had watched it and thought it was good. Unfortunately we differ on the definition of 'good'. I thought it was just awful. I couldn't sit through the entire movie and ended up just dipping into parts of it -- good enough for me to get a gist of the story. This falls into my basket of 'unwatchable movies' or 'cringe worthy films', which include stella titles like 'Superbad'. By the way, there isn't a panther scent but apparently now you can smell of meat courtesy of Burger King.

Tropics Thunder
This over the top comedy was quite hilarious. I was trying to figure out how they managed to land in a Chinese speaking territory (since when was China ever part of the golden triangle??) . And as with all non-Chinese films where a non Chinese is supposed to be speaking Chinese, the "Chinese" spoken by Kirk Lazarus was incomprehensible. Ditto for the supposed Chinese spoken in the Firefly series.

Vantage Point
Watchable but forgettable film that shows a terrorist act from the viewpoints of different people -- news station personnel (not clear which particular character), a secret service bodyguard, the president of the USA, an American tourist who had filmed important evidence inadvertently, a Spanish policeman, an ex-special forces military man forced to take part in the terrorist act masterminded by a islamic terrorist group and a little Spanish girl who was caught up in the meelee. What was chiefly of interest was that they chose to portray American intelligence as being inept against these terrorists who prevail -- the secret service men ended up killing "innocent" men instead of the real bad guys and the American president as being a spineless treehugger whose idea of "being strong" was doing nothing in the face of terrorism.

if i recall correctly, in Tropic Thunder, they were filming near Cambodia. There are Chinese Cambodians and they even celebrate CNY!

Although i have to agree, i didnt understand a word of the "Chinese" they said. I assumed it was for comic effect lolz
